CPS Instructor Development Course

Updated: May 30, 2012

Purpose and Description

The goal of the CPS Instructor Development (CPS ID) Course is to enhance the instructional skills of Certified CPS Instructors and Instructor candidates. The CPS ID curriculum was developed by the CPS Board to provide Instructors and Instructor Candidates with the tools to improve classroom skills and to provide fresh ideas and techniques to enhance development and delivery of presentations. It is designed to help you deliver the NHTSA CPS certification curriculum in an engaging manner, however, this course will provide participants with the skills and abilities to become better public speakers in any setting.

The CPS Instructor Development Course is a 1 or 2 day class and is modified from the NHTSA/ Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) 4 ½ day Instructor Development course. While the course can accommodate up to 20 participants, classes with 10-12 individuals provides the most effective learning environment.

Day one is designed to be taught over eight hours and consists of 7 instructional modules. Participants will be required to prepare and deliver a CPS related presentation, which may be videotaped for review and feedback.

A second optional day has been included that provides additional instructional practice with CEU opportunities. Participants who wish to take part in the second day will be assigned a CEU topic on day one and will present this topic to the class on day two.

Intended Audience

The primary audience for this course is currently Certified CPS Instructors and Instructor Candidates.

The course is available for instruction by Certified CPS Instructors. Individual monitoring observers are allowed with approval by the host.

Because course participants will have varying levels of CPS experience, course instructors have the option of adjusting presentation assignments to meet the needs of the students.

This course may be included as part of adult teaching experience for the Instructor Candidate application.

Course Materials

The National Child Passenger Safety Board is providing CPS Technician Instructors with a downloadable version of the CPS Instructor Development Course. Instructors can access the materials through their CPS Certification Online Profiles by clicking on the “Instructor Downloads (CPS Board)” action item. The Board regrets that due to budget restrictions, we are not able to provide a printed instructor manual or student workbooks.

We appreciate your continued dedication to the field and hope you enjoy the course.

Downloads for Certified Instructors are available in the restricted access area. Instructors can also gain access through their profiles on the Safe Kids Certification website.
