Car Seat Basics is a free introductory child passenger safety training that takes about 60 minutes to complete.

The goal of the training, which focuses on passenger vehicles, is to help participants feel more confident about car seat, booster seat and seat belt use by developing awareness for evidence-based guidelines of correct use.

Note to CPSTs: This introductory training does not qualify for child passenger safety CEUs.

  • Awareness training for parents, caregivers, employees, etc.
  • Prerequisite for car seat distribution programs
  • Introductory training for people interesting in becoming a Child Passenger Safety Technician
  • Organizational training for people transporting children
  • Staff training for healthcare and fire/emergency medical services personnel

Delivery Formats

Online Learning: The online version of this training is available in the Child Passenger Safety Learning Portal and takes about 60 minutes to complete. Learners may complete the self-paced online learning incrementally or all at once.

To earn proof of completion, learners must:

  1. Complete the course to 100%.
  2. Successfully complete the accompanying quiz with a minimum of 7 of 10 questions answered correctly within two attempts. If learners do not successfully complete the quiz within two attempts, the course will be reset.

In-Person: Any currently certified Child Passenger Safety Technician or Instructor may deliver an in-person offering of this training. An in-person training takes about 90 minutes to deliver.

To earn proof of completion, participants must attend the training in its entirety.

Online Learning Group Delivery Option

Free. A group delivery option is available for organizations wanting to use the online delivery format of Car Seat Basics for groups. Designated group admins can enroll learners in the training, track their progress and run completion reports.
